Giving Rural China’s Dreams a Voice: A Thousand Children, A Thousand Futures

In September 2024, the I Love Learning Education Centre China, the non-profit arm of the Ireland Sino Institute, launched the project "Give 1,000 Rural Children an English Education." This initiative is dedicated to providing high-quality English education to children in rural Liaoning Province, aiming to bridge the widening educational gap between urban and rural communities in China.
Dropout rates in rural China have reached alarming levels, with research indicating that in some regions, nearly 50% of rural Chinese students do not complete their education. This sobering figure highlights the significant challenges rural families face in keeping their children in school and on a path toward higher education.
Despite these obstacles, the project has witnessed countless success stories, thanks to the unwavering support of donors and volunteers. Many students supported by the initiative have successfully graduated from high school and gone on to pursue higher education opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

A Rural China Success Story

One particularly inspiring example is Eric, a young student from a disadvantaged background. Concerned about her son’s future amid high local dropout rates, Eric’s mother turned to the program for support. With perseverance and guidance from the I Love Learning team, Eric recently graduated from high school and is now attending university — a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of the program.
As Pat McCarthy, an Irishman based in China and founder of the Ireland Sino Institute, eloquently states:
"The most powerful moment is when a child from a rural village steps through our doors, battles against all odds to graduate high school, maybe even university, and then comes back, looks us in the eye, and says, ‘I did it.’ That one moment is worth everything."
The generosity of donors plays a crucial role in making these outcomes possible. Contributions enable the organization to recruit skilled educators — both local and international — to serve in areas where such expertise is often lacking. Donor support also strengthens the English education curriculum, helping rural children gain the skills needed to graduate high school and pursue higher education, narrowing the opportunity gap between urban and rural communities.
Through collective effort and shared commitment, the project continues to transform the futures of thousands of rural children in China, offering them hope, opportunity, and a path toward a brighter tomorrow.

The I Love Learning Education Centre serves as the philanthropic arm of the Ireland Sino Institute. It has supported 20,000 rural Chinese children in staying in school since 2012 through various educational and philanthropic initiatives. It is also a vetted organisation on GlobalGiving.
